This past week, German officers arrested two Bulgarian nationals in Neunkirchen, Germany who were suspected of taking part in a criminal organization that trades newborn babies. The 58-year-old man and 51-year-old woman are now being held in custody, the police said in a statement.

According to CNN, the plan was for the couple to bring at least eight pregnant women from Bulgaria to its neighbor Greece. Then, two suspects handed the newborns to other members of the criminal gang for resale. The mothers would then receive their promised payment.

After several investigations, the Saarland police authorities took in the couple while they were driving. The two appeared at the Saarbruecken District court and are now held in Saarbruecken and Zweibrucken correctional facilities respectively.
