The Viking Times Taster, Installation Six: Crumbl Cookies (Part 2)

Zoe Long and Christian Buonopane

Earlier this week, Christian Buonopane (our amazing driver), Jenessa Wadkins and I went to the newly popular cookie spot: Crumbl Cookies. This shot opened up earlier this school year and became a miniature cultural reset.  There are multiple locations, including Medford, Saugus, and Woburn. If anyone is not familiar with this store here is a quick rundown. Crumbl opened up initially in 2017, but as they continued to grow and gain a larger following, their flavors did as well. Since then, new flavors have been added weekly, with a rotating menu of 5 unique cookies a week. Sometimes they’ll even bring back old flavors.

The flavors that they were offering this week are Snickerdoodle Cupcake, Buttermilk Pancake, Orange Creamsicle, Lemon Blackberry, and Iced Oatmeal. They also had leftover cookies from last week’s spread such as Cookie Dough and Smores. We were able to try all of these. Here are our thoughts:

Snickerdoodle Cupcake –

Zoe: Whenever Crumbl Cookies have a heavy frosting, I am never particularly a large fan, and that theme continues with this cookie. The cookie itself was amazing. I love snickerdoodles and they did an incredible job as the cookie was perfectly cooked and had a great flavor. Although, I think that the amount of frosting, as well as the overpowering flavor of the frosting, made the cookie a lot less enjoyable. I would give this cookie a 6.5/10.

Christian: I am not a fan of heavy frosting in general, so that automatically sort of made me not like this. However, the cookie itself was delicious. It was warm, and melted in my mouth. I could taste the cinnamon, and it was great. I would give this cookie a 6.5 out of 10.

Jenessa: This cookie was very good, but unfortunately the frosting really overpowered it. I would give it a 6/10.

Buttermilk Pancake –

Zoe: As Christian said as well, my expectations were beat with this cookie. The pancake flavor was spot on and incredibly delicious. The cookie itself was warm, light, and able to incorporate all of the flavors cohesively. I would give this cookie an 8/10.

Christian: This cookie beat my expectations by a lot. I don’t like buttermilk, nor do I like pancakes, and nor do I like a syrupy flavor. However, this cookie was able to incorporate all of these flavors into a very palatable cookie, and I enjoyed it a lot. I would give this cookie a 8 out of 10.

Jenessa: This cookie was very delicious. There were multiple different flavors inside of the cookie, from the maple frosting to the butter, and all of them worked well together. I would give this cookie an 8/10.

Orange Creamsicle –

Zoe: At first bite, I wasn’t sure how I felt about this cookie. First off, I usually like the warmed cookies a lot better. Secondly, the flavor was incredibly strong and overpowering at first. Although, when I took my second bite, I found myself enjoying the cookie a lot more. The flavor was very refreshing and not like anything they had done before. I would give this cookie a 7/10.

Christian: This cookie was by far my favorite. I really love anything orange flavored, and was looking forward to this. In general, I find myself liking chilled cookies far more than warm cookies. I was skeptical at first, as I didn’t want the creamsicle aspect to be too overpowering and too sweet. To my pleasant surprise, it wasn’t. The cookie was tangy, as was the frosting, with an authentic orange flavor. This cookie was a 10 out of 10.

Jenessa: This cookie is disgusting and I would go as far to say it was the worst Crumbl cookie I have ever had. Although I am biased because I do not like oranges. I would give this cookie a 0/10.

Orange Creamsicle Average Rating: 6.6/10

Lemon Blackberry –

Zoe: This cookie was probably my least favorite out of the bunch. There were A LOT of flavors in this cookie, and they all seemed to be fighting against each other. Also, fruit flavors served warm have never been my favorite thing. I would give this cookie a 4/10.

Christian: Honestly, I was not expecting this cookie to be as good as it was. I thought it was definitely weird to have fruit frosting, as well as literal jelly on a cookie. Nevertheless, I still tried it, and it was pretty good. I really liked the color of the frosting, a light purple, and how the jelly was a dark purple. I give this an 8/10.

Jenessa: I would have enjoyed this cookie a lot more if it was chilled. The flavors in this cookie served warm made me uncomfortable. I would give this cookie a 3/10.

Iced Oatmeal –

Zoe: I thought this cookie was incredible. The icing was delicious and the cookie texture was perfect. I have always been a fan of a simpler cookie, and this one delivered. It wasn’t overpowering at all, but there was still so much flavor inside of this cookie. I would give this cookie a 10/10.

Christian: I’ve always felt that oatmeal cookies are underrated, and they get too much hate for no reason. I’m here to stop that! I think that they are great, and a true classic. Although Crumbl’s rendition was nothing special, they were still excellent. I give this a 8/10.

Jenessa: This cookie was basic, but a classic. You can never go wrong with an iced oatmeal cookie. I would give this cookie a 9/10.

Cookie Dough –

Zoe: I was looking forward to trying this cookie, and although it was good, I was let down a bit. The cookie dough flavor was very artificial and didn’t taste very good. The texture of the cookie worked very well with the texture of the toppings, but again the flavor left a lot to be desired. I would give this cookie a 6/10.

Christian: Similarly to Zoe, I was also looking forward to trying the cookie dough, however I was disappointed. Although the cookie itself was fine, it wasn’t good. There was something in the frosting that tasted almost like syrup, which really threw me off. It was acceptable, but nothing to rave about at all. I give this a solid 6/10.

Jenessa: Personally, I was not a fan of this cookie. As I mentioned earlier, I am not a large fan of chilled cookies. I would give this cookie a 3/10.

Cookie Dough Average Rating: 5/10

Smores –

Zoe: This cookie was my other favorite, next to Iced Oatmeal. The flavor was incredibly accurate. The melted chocolate and melted marshmallow was perfectly melted and complimented the texture of the cookie perfectly. It was a lovely call to summer nights, and I would definitely have it again. I would give this cookie a 10/10.

Christian: This cookie was delicious! Even though I do not like marshmallows, I wanted to give it a try. I was not let down. The cookie tasted just like a s’more, and the marshmallows were even melty just like they would’ve been on a smore. I give this cookie a 9/10.

Jenessa: This cookie was quite literally the best thing I have ever eaten. It was so delectable and tasted exactly like an actual s’more. The flavors worked perfectly together and the marshmallow was just the right amount of gooey. It is my favorite cookie I have ever had. I would give this cookie a 10/10.

S’mores Average Rating: 9.66/10

At the end of the day, I would call this Crumbl week pretty average. There were some very good cookies, and few disappointments. Overall, I believe that there is definitely a cookie there for anybody, so I would recommend this place. They are creative and talented, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that is curious about what they will come up with next.
