A quick overview of the season
Although smaller in number than the outdoor track team, the indoor track team is a strong team comprised of many fast athletes in Winthrop. The Indoor track team has competed several times and although they have struggled, they have had many successes such as Arianna Capuccio in the girls long jump.
Last Season
The team struggled last year but did have some wins. The captains last year were Elizabeth Carney and Ben Prew, who were great leaders. 2023 captain Daniela Gomez says that “our record against big schools like Beverly and Peabody weren’t the best [but] we were able to win against teams that were closer to our size.”
Expectations for the season and star players
The winter track team has many expectations for the season. The boys and girls team lost several key players last year; despite this, the team wishes to go out strong this season with several new players. On the boys team, Captain Nargi to has high hopes for Aaron Armistead to make a great difference in the teams performance; “Aaron is new to track this season and will be focusing on the high jump for us. I know that he is an amazing athlete and a great jumper and I think that will do some great things in the high jump this season.” Aaron is not the only new player who was given a shoutout. Annabelle Giardino was also given a shutdown by Captain April, who said she will “stand out as a distance runner for our team.”
Returning players Liam Kenny and Arianna Cappuccio were also stated to be key players. Arianna was noted for her speed and impressiveness in the long jump by Captain April Ferguson, who said, “Arianna had an outstanding performance in the long jump, coming in first place and is a key sprinter for our team.”
Liam was noted for his long distance capabilities by Captains April, as he “had a great performance in the one mile, clocking an impressive time,” and Captain Owen Nargi, who called him “a phenomenal runner coming off a great cross-country season. I believe that he will do great in any event he is in, whether it’s the mile or the two miles.” Captain Owen Nargi was also noted for his long distance capabilities, however as of writing this he is injured and unable to perform.
The team has an optimistic future, with many of the star players being underclassman. Good luck to the track team as they enter deeper into their season!
