As human activity progresses and increasing damage is done to the Earth, many people, including myself, are often left wondering what may happen when climate change begins to feel real and becomes a severe problem that impacts our lives. Though we speculate and attempt to research on our own, it would be incredibly informational to have someone well-educated on the topic share some knowledge. Lucky for us, a professor at MIT is looking to do just that!
Kerry Emanuel, a meteorology professor at MIT, will be coming to Winthrop next week. He will be giving a presentation on what may happen to Winthrop if temperatures keep rising, as well as informing us on what we can do to help prevent the harmful effects. There will also be a Q&A after the presentation, where any questions the audience may have will be answered.
The event will be held on Thursday, September 19th. It will be located in the EB Newton Building, at 45 Pauline Street, in the Lyceum Room. It is scheduled to start at 6 PM. The presentation will be free of charge, and all are welcome.
During a brief email conversation, I asked Professor Emanuel a few questions about himself and the presentation. He plans to give a broad overview of climate change and its effects, while also ending with hurricane risk in Winthrop. His history with meteorology runs deep, making him highly qualified. He taught meteorology for forty-four years, before his partial-retirement in 2022. His initial interest in the subject was sparked during childhood, and he would later develop an interest in the effects of climate change on weather. He was invited to Winthrop to present, and accepted (lucky for us!).
If you are interested in how Winthrop will be affected by climate change, I highly recommend you attend this presentation. It is free of charge and the presentation will not go over politics or policies, so all people are encouraged to attend. It may open your eyes to the severity of climate change, or just further educate you on the subject.
