This past Wednesday marks the twenty-third anniversary of the tragic attacks on September 11th, 2001. It is important that we remember events such as this one and respect those who passed and their families, especially on the anniversary of this date.
What were the Twin Towers and the World Trade Center?
The World Trade Center was a commercial complex in Manhattan, with the Twin Towers being its centerpiece.
According to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, “‘9/11′ is shorthand for four coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group, that occurred on the morning of September 11, 2001.” In this event, nineteen terrorists from the group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two of these planes then deliberately crashed into the North and South Towers’ upper floors. Another plane was flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the other crashed into an empty field in western Pennsylvania. One of the planes that was flown into the Twin Towers was Flight 93, and, sadly, the 40 passengers who had boarded this flight did not survive.
To commemorate the twenty-third anniversary of 9/11, there was a ceremony held on the Memorial Plaza whose focal point was the reading of the names of the lives lost during this devastating event by family members. This ceremony observed a few moments of silence, where they respected and remembered when each of the World Trade Center towers fell and the lives lost on Flight 93.
On this day from now and every year going forward, we should all do our best to pay respect to the victims of these attacks and their families. It is important that we learn from history, while trying to better our future and move forward.

That was supposed to be my very first day of student teaching, but it got postponed the night before. I’ve always been pretty happy it worked out that way…
