On August 29th, Netflix released the first season of KAOS, a dark comedy with heavy themes and humorous elements. Today, it is #10 in the top Netflix shows in the U.S. and #3 on IMDb’s Most Popular TV Shows list. People are raving about this new show. It has been described as “A darkly funny, visually rich saga that highlights the enduring relevance of these moral quandaries and character studies — without taking itself too seriously” by Rotten Tomatoes. Whether it’s the complex characters or the detailed storyline, this show has everything any TV fan could ever ask for.
KAOS tells the story of three main characters, Eurydice (Riddy), Caeneus, and Ariadne (Ari). These three characters have very different stories but share the same prophecy: “A line appears, the Order wanes, the Family falls, and Kaos reigns.”
The first character we are introduced to is Riddy. She lives in Krete with her husband Orpheus. Orpheus is a famous singer and is living his best life, married to the girl of his dreams. Meanwhile, Riddy is very unhappy in the relationship, and has the desire to leave him, but is unsure how. She goes to a temple and confides in one of Hera’s Tacitus, who also happens to be her mother. On the way out she is hit by a car, leading to her death. Orpheus is devastated by her death, and with the help of Dionysus, he attempts to go to the underworld to save her.
Riddy, who is now stuck in the underworld, meets our next main character Caeneus. He died ten years prior and has been in the underworld performing his assigned jobs. He is waiting for his mother to come back to the underworld because he never got to say goodbye when he was killed. Together, Caeneus and Riddy start to unravel the secrets hidden in the underworld and realize that the gods have not been telling the truth.
Back in Krete, we meet the final main character Ari. Her father is Minos, who is the king of Krete and is in communication with the gods. When Ari was a baby, she supposedly suffocated her brother Glaucus. This is still relevant in her daily life, even as an adult, because her mother still holds it against her. As her story progresses, the truth about her brother’s “death” is revealed, causing Ari to realize that things are more complicated than they seem.
Overall this show is worth the watch. It contains some well-known actors, such as Jeff Goldblum as Zeus and Janet McTeer as Hera. There is a captivating plot, which gives a fresh twist on Greek myths while staying true to the original lore. Also, there has been talk about a renewal by Netflix for Season 2. I highly recommend watching KAOS if you get a chance.
