These teenage years are a hard time for many people. No matter what you think of anyone, everyone is going through something, even if they don’t talk about it. Life is hard and can be busy, weekends are slowly turning into weekdays and the long days of vacations are no longer what they used to be. It’s very easy to get wrapped up and see life as a dull repeating thing. Life has become so hard people are forgetting to smile.
When I talk about forgetting to smile, I’m not just talking physically. People are forgetting to have fun and enjoy life. Viewing life as a chore is horrible mentally. The correlation between hard work and misery is a mindset that has become very popularized recently. A lot of motivational speakers will tell you that. Most people despite knowing this can’t change their mindset though. It’s hard to try to enjoy something you’ve been so ingrained in and taught to hate. My recommendation is to try new things. Doing new things could be anything. Trying new things could be talking to someone you don’t talk too much. Trying new things could be walking a different path to school. Trying new things could be playing a game you haven’t played in a while. Trying new things can be hard though, for some people this will come easily to you. Most people will struggle regardless though. For this reason, I created a list of easy and small things to do to help you start.
1. Take a walk
It looks simple but it’s very helpful. Taking a walk (maybe with some music) greatly helps your brain experience new things. The world is covered with unique things. Maybe it’s the breeze of the air or the briskness of the wind. Or maybe it’s the squirrel in the tree or the birds flying around. Whatever it is the outside is a fascinating place filled with new experiences.
2. Play a video game
Sitting down and playing a video game might sound lazy but I consider it one of the most productive things to do. It’s a great way to solve challenges while resting your body. Video games are also an amazing way to have fun accomplishing something with friends or people online. I highly recommend people find a game and play with friends. It’s a great way to spend time.
3. Get food with friends
Sure this costs money but it’s absolutely worth it. Talking with friends and eating your favorite foods is an amazing way to bond. I have countless memories with friends getting pizza, burgers, or whatever we’re feeling like.
4. Go shopping
Most people wear clothes they bought several years ago. This is normal and there’s nothing wrong with that. But your clothing preferences will change over time. Getting new clothes can help you feel better. Having a fresh wardrobe can help you feel amazing.
5. Try a new sport
Sports are an amazing way to meet new people and be part of a second family. Many sports in Winthrop High School have an amazing culture and are extremely friendly to new players. As the captain of the boys varsity tennis team, I highly suggest anyone interested to join!
6. Lifting and running
Lifting is a great way to release dopamine and get stronger. Lifting with friends is always a really fun way to bond over an incredibly productive use of time. Running is also an amazing way to release dopamine. Lifting and running also is a great way to get healthier and lifting and running helps boost motivation.
7. Spend time with family
Just like your friends, your family is a very important part of your life. It’s important to spend time with your family, not just your parents.
There are lots of amazing options to enjoy your time. Life is meant to be fun and every single part of it is an opportunity to do great things. It’s hard to see life as a privilege sometimes but it truly is and everyone needs to remember that. I hope my recommendations help! Whatever you do, don’t forget to smile!
