The musical SIX follows the stories of the six ex-wives of King Henry VIII. Each of the queens are competing over who has suffered the most due to Henry. Throughout the musical, each queen has a song in which they describe their life and argue for their case of why they suffered the most. At the end of the musical, they realize they should all stick together because they can all relate to their distaste for King Henry. I came into the musical on Saturday, the 16th, with this knowledge already known. My mother and I both enjoy watching plays, especially musicals. Going into the musical I had very high expectations, due to the difficulty of the musical itself and the talent of which is required by any actor and the crew to create the sets and act the musical out. Despite my high expectations, the musical way exceeded anything I thought they could possibly do.
The lighting done by junior Leila Jurvioch and sophomore Ella Spagnoli did an amazing job with the light work. The lighting was always where it was supposed to be and followed the actors perfectly. The atmosphere that was created during the musical was amazing. I was especially impressed during the scene of “Haus of Holbein” where Elaina Freeman, Jake Kowalczuck, and Allie Joyce all did tremendous jobs on the stage.
The musical started with “Ex-Wives”. The song was extremely explosive and absolutely exceeded expectations. It was well done in comparison to the Broadway version of the play. The feeling was very similar and the six queens did a great job bringing energy into the song.
After “Ex-Wives”, freshman Holly Nimblett stepped up massively, having a leading role (Catherine of Aragon) and singing “No Way”. As one of the opening songs, it did an amazing job of establishing and creating the mood for the rest of the musical. The crowd was extremely alive after the song.
“Don’t Lose Ur Head” was also done by an underclassman, sophomore Juliet Bettano who was Anne Boyeln. Bettano perfectly fits the role, doing an amazing job keeping the audience entertained by mentioning the fact that she has lost her head several times throughout the musical as well.
During “Heart of Stone”, Josie Barry did a spectacular job acting very motherly as Jane Seymour, who was very unique for the 6 queens. Taking one of the hardest roles, Josie did an amazing job and eased the musical to the halfway point.
One of my favorite acts had to be “Haus of Holbein”, as said earlier, Kowalczuck did an amazing job as the artist, Hans Holbein. The lighting team as also said earlier was insanely good during this scene. The dark lighting and the neon look of the stage transformed the look of the play. This was a huge mood change in the musical.
Right after “Haus of Holbein”, junior Chelsea Long as Anna of Cleves instantly came into the musical as the act shifted into “Get Down”. Many people considered “Get Down” as one of the best parts of the play.
“All You Wanna Do” was done by Jillian Buonopane as Katherine Howard. I believe that it was the best act in the musical. The act also had a great transition going into “I Don’t Need Your Love”, which had Emily Walker as Catherine Parr.
“Six” and “The Megasix” were both done by the entire company of the play. They were a great way to end the musical and the crowd was extremely happy with how it ended. The crowd instantly broke into applause as the acts ended.
The musical was easily my favorite musical the Drama Society has done. The amount of love and dedication towards the musical by the Drama Society was shown. Even as I went into the auditorium I knew it would be a great musical.
A special congratulations to everyone who was part of the musical!
