The wrestling team is a new addition to the winter sports at Winthrop High School. Although there has been a wrestling team in the past, the team is back. Many new people are joining the team, which is combined with the Saugus wrestling team. I talked with several members of the team who go to Winthrop High School to gain an understanding of how the team works, where their meets are, and how everything will work itself out.
JOE DISNEY: “How does practice start and what do you do in practice?”
ERON MUJA: “They roll up the mats, [we] warm-up, and practice normally”
KHALIL: “The practice starts off with dynamic stretches then lead to basic wrestling moves and strategies like penetrations and takedowns. We finish up practice with conditioning so sprinting up and down the stairs for up to 20 minutes”
JD: “Where and when are the practices and how do you get to them?”
EMMANUEL: “Officer Rob takes us there and on the way back a bus or taxi takes us to the school”
KHALIL: “We have practice Monday – Friday from 3-5 PM and sometimes morning Saturday classes, we get there in a minivan and back in a minibus for now”
ERON MUJA: “The practice is in Saugus and we get there by car and come back by minibus”
JD: “How does wrestling work as a school sport?”
KAHLIL: “Winthrop and Beverly conjoined with Saugus to make a wrestling team and we have matches/tournaments sometimes up to 3 times a week”
JD: “What are you excited for?”
KAHLIL: “I’m excited to get better and advance at wrestling”
The wrestling team hasn’t had a meet yet as their season just started. The best of luck to the team as they begin their season!
