For The Viking Times, we sent out a Google Form to (nearly) everyone in the Winthrop Public School District about their favorite holiday recipes.
Our first recipe from the staff came from Mr. Dixon. He provided information about his Cousin Bea’s cranberry sauce. His mom’s cousin’s recipe is one of his favorites as “it’s infinitely better than the soulless ‘jell-o’ version of cranberry sauce that comes in the cans, and it makes the kitchen smell incredible.”
Mr. Dixon shared his cousin’s recipe on a Google Form. The ingredients are simple:
- Cranberries
- Apples
- A pear
- Raisins
- Orange zest
- Orange juice
- Spices:
- Ceylon cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Other spices of your choice (Mr. Dixon recommends cloves)
He instructs everything to simmer for about three hours and you can keep it in the refrigerator for a while before you want to eat it. In the Google Form, Mr. Dixon did not provide measurements. When I asked him about this, I could not get much out of him before he told me that he would not share all the contents of his cousin’s recipe as he said, “Cousin Bea would not be very happy!” Before walking away, he provided me with three measurements:
- 1 pound of cranberries
- 2 apples
- 1 pear
Seasoned chefs may be able to figure out the measurements or simply eyeball it when they make it themselves based on the picture provided above. By all means, make this recipe! This is why The Viking Times is publishing articles! If you venture to try this, let us know how it went by leaving a comment! Happy cooking and Happy Holidays!

Guaranteed to knock your socks off.
Cooking is most fun when you can figure out all the ingredients yourself. Enjoy!
