Winthrop High School sports have officially come to a close as we enter the final days of the school year. All the sports teams put tremendous effort into their seasons working to be the best they can be. There is however a team that I would like to highlight before the school year officially comes to a close, and that is the Winthrop High School Track Team. Our schools track team is made up of alot of our student body, providing a fun way to stay active and connect with peers. Throughout the season the track team has faced many triumphs within the boys and girls teams.
For starters, Nick Cappuccio and Aaron Armistead both qualified and succeeded at the state level. Nick got 4th place in both the 100 meters and 200 meters while Aaron managed to snag 11th place in the 100 meter hurdles. Nick averaged times around 11 seconds for his 100 meter and averaged around 22 seconds for his 200 meter. Aaron averaged 16 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles as well as serving as a great team leader on top of his amazing efforts. Arianna Cappuccio also had fantastic leadership skills throughout the season. As well as putting in work in the 100 meters and long jump. Another upperclassmen that grabbed points for the team was Owen Nargi for the 400 meter hurdles. Lylah Cassidy also excelled in the triple jump, jumping up to 30 ‘5 feet. Gabriel Perez earned a 2:16 PR in the 800 meter and worked tirelessly throughout the whole season. The upperclassmen all had great seasons and served as great models leading the underclassman through the season, bringing energy and a positive spirit to every meet and practice.
On the topic of underclassmen, many of them had great seasons. Ali Benchikhi and Mary Healy both excelled at high jump this season. Ali jumped up to 5 ‘8 feet, usually grabbing the freshman one of the top 5 spots at a meet. Mary jumped a height of 4’4 feet earning herself top 5 spots as well. Hailey DeMarco made strides in the 400 meter hurdles and brought in great times with the 800 meter running a PR of 2:52.44. and worked extremely hard during practices and meets every single day. Thomas D’Amico excelled this season, working hard and running a best of 54.1 seconds in the 400 meter, then soaring in the field events by jumping 39 ‘1 feet in triple and 19’ 4 in long jump, making him someone you definitely want to watch out for.
Both the boys and girls relay teams did great throughout the season. The boys had 3 relay teams, the boys 4×4 was made up of Liam Natereno, Gabe Perez, Owen Nargi/ Liam Kenny (depending on injury) and Thomas D’Amico. The boys 4×1 was composed of Quinn Linehan, Wyatt Teixeira, Robert Biancardi and Aaron Armitstead. Then the boys 4×8 was made up of Liam Connors, Elvys Paula, Eli Lawton and Ryan Gillis. The girls only had 2 relay teams with Ella Giacalone, Danika Ripley, Bailey Ferguson and Lyla McCarey taking on the 4×4. Then Grace Scorzella, Lylah Cassidy, Danika Ripley, and Sophia Bocchio made up the 4×1 team. The relay teams were very successful throughout the year bringing in great times and points from multiple meets. Danika Ripley served as a great presence, usually filling in whenever someone was hurt or sick on the girls team. Lyla McCarey also put in tremendous effort during the 4×4 race being a stable anchor for the team.
At the end of the season the boys team came away tied in 6th place with Swampscott for the NEC after having a great season. The girls team unfortunately did not have as much success tieing for last place with Salem for the NEC. Despite what it may say on paper and in the standing both the boys and girls teams had great seasons, much effort and time was put into each event and I hope the team can be happy with the success they saw throughout the season.
