Fall is here, which means fall sports are now in session. The boys and girls cross-country team is already doing great. On September 3, 2025, the team had their first meet in Peabody, which went very well. This season, the team will have 7 meets in total. There will be 4 home meets and 3 away meets; anyone who is interested can come and support this hardworking team.
The cross country team consists of 10 people ranging from freshmen to seniors to compete against schools across the district. They train daily to ensure they stay conditioned and persistent during their meets. If you are interested in joining this team next season, get in touch with coach Eric Ferguson. New members are always welcome! The team is led by senior captains Bailey Ferguson and Liam Natareno, who both hope that the season will continue to be the best one yet.
I interviewed senior captain Bailey Ferguson to get some insight into her experience being on the Cross Country team.
Q: “What do you guys hope to achieve this season?”
A: “This season as a team, we hope to improve week by week, by chipping time away from our PRs.”
Q: “What is the best part of your training routine?”
A: “ The best part of our training routine is the days after meets when we get to play ultimate Frisbee all together.”
Q: “Favorite local running route or course?”
A: “ My favorite local running route would have to be the beach. It’s perfect, not too cold, not too hot.”
Q: “What is your snack or meal?”
A: “-My go-to snack or meal is definitely fruit snacks or oranges.”
Q: “Lastly, what do you enjoy most about being on the team?”
A: “I enjoy the community the most. Everyone on the team works hard during practices and meets. They strive to be better and encourage everyone to be their best.”
With more meets ahead, the team will push harder and chase new records. No matter the outcome, the team will stick close together and represent our school with integrity and spirit. Good luck to the Winthrop Boys and Girls Varsity Cross Country team!
