Every sports fan loves those moments that last a lifetime. The buzzer beaters, championships, broken records, and so on. However, just beneath it falls the stories that leave us wondering, “What If?”. What if Derrick Rose never tore his ACL? What if Bo Jackson’s hip stayed healthy through his career? What if Robert Griffin never hurt his knee?
Every sport has players who looked unstoppable at a point, until something out of their control stopped them. Just a short few days ago, Cameron Skattebo of the New York Giants went down with an ankle injury, one that looked scarily similar to what we’ve seen in the past. Not an injury that ends a career, but rather quitely change
A year ago, Skattebo wasn’t even projected to be drafted. After a standout season at ASU, helping lead them to a Big 12 Championship along with an 11-3 record and a playoff berth, he was drafted in the 4th round by the New York Giants. His career has been nothing short of fantastic, already. A 0-star recruit out of high school, he received an offer to play at Sacramento State College, then transferred into Arizona State prior to his junior year, and then was drafted to the NFL.
Skattebo’s injury was the kind of injury that makes every fan in the stadium hold their breath. Not because it was career-ending, but because it looks just like the type of injuries that flip the script on a players career. Skattebo has always played with a very different style than most, he runs through contact, plays with energy and anger, like every single play means everything to him.
Cam is expected to return by next year during Week 1 of the NFL regular season. When that time comes, that same question will continue to linger, “Can he return to normal?”. Or, will this be the moment where all starts to feel different?
Skattebo’s story is still being written. Maybe this is just another test, or just another chapter in his story. Maybe he proves that “What If” doesn’t have to mean “what could have been”.
For now, all we can do is wonder.
