The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on September 14, 2025, at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater, and it was an absolute treat for TV fans everywhere. Comedian Nate Bargatze took the hosting reins, and I have to say– ever since his SNL appearance, I’ve thought he was endlessly funny, so seeing him command the stage for the entire evening was a real thrill. As for the ceremony itself, it was fascinating to see which shows and performances took the cake.
For anyone who isn’t entirely familiar, the Emmys honor excellence in television. They’re often as much about recognizing breakthrough talent and unexpected wins as they are about predictable favorites, and this year proved no exception. Below, you’ll find a full recap of the night’s highlights and everything you need to know about the 2025 Emmys!
Comedy Shows
Apple TV+’s The Studio completely dominated the comedy categories, taking home a staggering 13 awards. That’s the most ever for a comedy series in a single season, surpassing the previous record held by The Bear. It won Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actor for Seth Rogen, and awards for directing and writing.
Drama Shows
On the drama side, HBO Max’s The Pitt was a clear frontrunner, winning Best Drama Series. Noah Wyle, 26 years after his last Emmy nomination for ER, finally took home a trophy for his portrayal of Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch. Katherine LaNasa also snagged Best Supporting Actress for her role in the series.
Another incredible moment came with Tramell Tillman winning Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Severance, making him the first Black actor to ever claim that award!
Adolescence, the HBO limited series, swept the limited series categories with six awards, including Best Limited Series, Best Actor for Stephen Graham, and Best Supporting Actor for 15-year-old Owen Cooper. Yes, you read that right–15 years old! Cooper made history as the youngest male acting winner at the Emmys, and watching his acceptance speech was pure joy. It’s rare that a show can dominate both in critical acclaim and in awards the way Adolescence did, but it absolutely deserved the attention. I was especially thrilled to see Erin Doherty take home the award for Best Supporting Actress– her performance on the show was absolutely captivating, and it’s wonderful to see her talent recognized.
Variety, Talk, and Reality Shows
It wasn’t all scripted drama and comedy, of course. Stephen Colbert had a big night, winning two Emmys following the cancellation of The Late Show, including Best Talk Series and Best Writing for a Talk Series. The Traitors took home Best Reality Competition, while Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won Best Scripted Variety Series and Writing. And of course, SNL 50: The Anniversary Special snagged Best Variety Special, which I was very pleased with.
Final Thoughts
The 2025 Emmys were, in many ways, not just a celebration of incredible talent, but a testament to the ongoing evolution of television itself. As someone who follows awards season closely, I have to say this year’s winners felt truly deserving, and watching them take the stage left me genuinely satisfied. I can’t help but be excited to see what next year has in store!
