First we got the Gulf of America, now it’s about time President Trump uses his presidential power for something strange again. And this change may bring some serious CHANGE to your wallet (get it, change? Like having spare change in your wallet cause we’re talking about money, haha).
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently confirmed that the government has officially prepared a design for a $250 bill featuring our beloved President Donald Trump’s face. The reasoning behind this is because of America’s upcoming 250th birthday (the Semiquincentennial, but that word is too long for me to sound out). Technically, the bill is practically ready to be released and we’re just waiting for lawmakers to greenlight it, the Treasury is apparently preparing the printing presses ahead of time.
What could this mean?
As usual, the internet responded quickly. Many arguments from online communities have been made against the erection of that bill, although that’s not to say people have found positives.
First of all, you should know that the current system is built on 1s, 5s, 20s, and the occasional 100. $250 is a big leap, from a solid 100. Imagine ordering a $4 coffee from Dunkin’ and then handing the cashier a $250 bill, and asking for change of course. They already don’t get paid enough to do half the stuff they’ve been doing. Assuming they do not have any 100s lying around, you better hope they have twelve 20s, a five, and a one in their register.
Playing devil’s advocate here, renting a hotel room or any else in that price range is more efficient. One bill, one room. That should be a hotel’s slogan, I’m great at this kind of stuff.
Breaking a 160-Year-Old Rule
Something that citizens have brought up is, as always, the legal issues this ensues.. Back in 1866, Congress passed a law stating that you’ve got to be dead to have your face be imprinted onto some form of U.S. currency. Why? Spencer M. Clark, who wasn’t even a president, printed his face onto a 5-cent banknote (inflation went crazy). Congress noticed how out of hand this could become, as there aren’t enough banknotes or coins to satisfy every government official’s dreams of becoming a currency, So the easiest solution was to ban living people from doing it forever.
The “Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act” would break that law. If, or when, this is passed, Trump will be the first person who is on a U.S. banknote, and is still roaming the Earth, in 160 years.
Now what?
The bill is still a prototype, or at least that’s what we tell ourselves. Treasury officials claim the only reason why they’ve made preparations is so that they can begin printing right away, in case Congress passes the act. Whether the Treasury is lying or not is up to the people’s interpretation. Until then, know this shouldn’t affect your life too much (unless you work in retail), and train your mental math skills needed to figure out how many crisp 250s you need to pay your monthly rent!
