On December 5, 2025, the first ever Global Space Awards event took place at the Natural History Museum in London, recognizing major contributions to space exploration and science. Many scientists, engineers, companies, and innovators from around the world got together to celebrate these accomplishments that are responsible for expanding humanity’s understanding of space and travel through it.
Multiple awards were presented during this ceremony. The Playmaker of the Year award was handed to Tahara Dawkins for her efforts in improving policies and regulations related to debris orbiting our planet, which is a growing concern as Earth’s orbit becomes filled with satellites. The Innovation Breakthrough Award was handed to Skylo Technologies for their advances in direct-to-satellite connectivity, which aim to expand global communication access. The Science Breakthrough Award was given to Beatriz Sánchez-Cano for her proposed M-MATISSE Mars mission, made to study space weather and explore things that may affect the living conditions that affect life.
Another thing this event also highlighted was progress towards self-sustainability during space operations, especially long ones. Companies, such as Astroscale and Space Forge, were recognized for the creation of technologies that assist in satellite repair and waste reduction during orbit. These efforts become more valuable as time goes on, as activity spent in space rises and long-term orbital safety becomes a priority. In addition to awarding achievements in the present, this ceremony paid tribute to the deceased astronaut and Navy Pilot, James Lovell, giving thanks to his impact on human spaceflight. Presenters made us aware of the importance of education in space science, inspiring curiosity and understanding is essential for future exploration.
