The relationship between the U.S and Iran have been boiling in years leading up, turning into military confrontations in the Middle East. These confrontations have got the whole world worried about a potential World War 3. Something that is currently just missile strikes has turned into multiple military confrontations, and there is no knowing when this confrontation can spiral out of control.
One of the first signs that pointed out that this isn’t just a phase is when the U.S. and Israel teamed up to strike the Iranian military, with Washington describing it as “necessary” to ease national tensions. Tehran, the capital of Iran, replied with many missile and drone attacks specifically targeting U.S. allies and military bases across the region. During these exchanged blows, U.S officials make statements stating that American deaths suffered are “going to be a great deal for the world,” indicating that the U.S aren’t afraid to sacrifice men to continue the conflict. Despite that, President Donald Trump continues to defend the strikes. He tries to make them seem essential to national and regional security, yet people involved in politics from both sides of the war don’t understand the long-term strategy and can only foresee escalation.
In response to the situation, the United Nations has notified the countries to cease-fire, hoping to protect the Middle East from these nation’s crossfire. However, this also may affect the entire world, and that’s where the real problem lies. European governments took note of this and have already expressed their worries about being drawn into a larger, more global scale battle. All of this information has been leading up to the popular online idea of “World War III” being near. Historians and politicians reassure people that the current conflict, while being serious to both sides of the war, does not yet make up a global war on the scale of the ones that have occurred in the past. However, the theory of World War III occurring soon is not completely absurd as escalation from either party can very well be what pushes us to a new tragedy.
A scenario that will lead up to a world war involves multiple global superpowers joining Iran. Russia and China both are kind of allies with Tehran. However, this is just a scenario as neither side has made open statements whether they plan on joining any conflicts. If this does happen, U.S allies will likely respond to back up the U.S, leading to a domino effect that hurls us into a World War.
A further escalation risk lies in maritime conflict. Sustained attempts by Iran to disrupt shipping in the Persian Gulf could trigger multinational naval coalitions aimed at securing sea lanes. An accidental clash between major naval forces operating in confined waterways could rapidly widen the conflict beyond its current participants. Another concern circulating online was “cyber warfare” breaking out on either side. Large-scale cyberattacks on government infrastructure, financial systems, or electricity systems could both lead our militaries into the war, but also affect innocent citizens with the lasting impact of cyber attacks. Data analysts who researched the situation state that a World War would require alliances to be stated beforehand, which would mean the militaries involved would’ve to be clear to us by now. During this publication of this article, this conflict may stretch across the world but it doesn’t involve the world.
Even with all the reassurance in mind, history may repeat itself. Past World Wars have shown how regional conflicts can quickly grow, especially when allies get involved. As military operations continue throughout the coming days, weeks, or maybe even months, people will be determining whether the Iran–U.S. confrontation stabilizes through time or enlarges into a global confrontation that I’m sure we all dread.
